The Importance of Wearing a Motorcycle Helmet

Posted by Jim Miron | Jul 27, 2022 | 0 Comments

In Connecticut, there's no legal requirement for adult riders to wear motorcycle helmets. That said, motorcycle accidents can result in life-changing – if not fatal – injuries, so here's why helmets matter.

The Dangers of Riding Without a Helmet

Helmets are designed to minimize head and neck trauma if you're involved in a crash. Are they effective, though? Well, according to data compiled by the Centers for Disease Control, helmets have been shown to:

  • reduce the risk of head injuries by around 69%; and
  • be around 37% effective in reducing fatalities.

Without a helmet, there's nothing to protect your head from flying debris or direct impact. This lack of protection puts you at higher risk of severe injuries, including:

Worryingly, out of 68 motorcycle road fatalities in 2021, 60 individuals did not wear a helmet. Moreover, motorcyclists are 29 times more likely to die in a collision than drivers in other vehicles. For your safety, consider wearing a helmet whenever you ride your motorcycle.

Motorcycle Helmets and Personal Injury Claims

If you don't wear a helmet and you're in a motorcycle collision, there's a chance the defendant will try to argue that the absence of a helmet:

  • caused your injuries; or
  • made your injuries worse.

Just because you're not wearing a helmet, though, doesn't mean you're responsible for the collision. Also, helmets only mitigate head and neck injuries – not other bodily injuries. As an experienced motorcycle crash attorney, I'm familiar with how defendants try to minimize their liability in these cases, and I will fight to ensure you get the fair settlement you're entitled to.
